This course is designed for community-based dentists practicing in rural or underserved areas or working with predominantly underserved populations. This course introduces working dental professionals to key principles of dental public health, including social determinants of health, oral health literacy, health promotion, and policy. Participants will gain practical skills to improve patient communication, design effective prevention strategies, and address oral health disparities in their communities. Through real-world applications and interactive learning, the course equips clinicians to move beyond individual patient care and contribute to population-level oral health improvement.
This course is offered as part of a three-course series offering a micro-credential in Dental Public Health.
Course Objectives:
1. Apply dental public health principles to practice: Apply concepts such as social determinants of health, cultural humility, and oral health literacy to improve patient care and address oral health disparities.
2. Design and evaluate oral health interventions: Develop and assess evidence-based health promotion strategies and programs using established planning and evaluation frameworks.
3. Engage in effective communication, policy, and advocacy: Use patient-centered communication strategies and evaluate the role of policy and advocacy in improving oral health outcomes and advancing equity
Kristin Hoeft, PhD, MPH is an Associate Professor in the Division of Oral Epidemiology and Dental Public Health at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Dentistry. Dr. Hoeft has expertise in program evaluation, health education, health literacy, and qualitative research methods. She has worked in the area of health disparities for 20 years. Her research focuses on making optimal home health experiences accessible to diverse and vulnerable populations and working with community-based settings to implement evidence-based practices in a feasible way. She is the director of the California Oral Health Technical Assistance Center (COHTAC), supporting oral health programming for health departments throughout California. She is affiliated with UCSF’s Healthforce Center, Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies, and the Center to Address Children’s Oral Health (CAN DO). She earned an undergraduate degree in Cultural Anthropology, a Masters in Public Health in Health Education, and PhD in Epidemiology and Translational Science.
