Diagnosis and Management of Complications Following Traumatic Dental Injuries

Course Outline: Traumatic dental injuries (TDI) and their complications can be overwhelming for patients, caregivers, and clinicians. This evidence-based series of presentations will address the sequelae of TDI in the permanent dentition, such as pulp canal obliteration, discoloration, pulp exposure, pulp necrosis, and resorption. Diagnosis and management of these complications, as well as the importance of a multidisciplinary approach involving general dentists and specialists, will be demonstrated through a series of clinical cases presented.

Course Objectives:

1. Recognize the range of complications that can arise from severe TDI.
2. Highlight the importance of using the Dental Trauma Guidelines.
3. Identify when endodontic treatment is required for each complication.
4. Understand the importance of a multidisciplinary approach when treating TDI and identify when referrals to other specialists are needed.
5. Apply concepts covered in the lecture to the clinical cases presented.

Day 1 (3h):

• Introduction to TDI

• Prevention of TDI

• Resources for diagnosis and management of TDI

• TDI types

• Immediate management of TDI

• Performing clinical and radiographic examinations

• Importance of thorough documentation

• Diagnosis and treatment of the hard dental tissues and the pulp

• Management of the exposed vital pulp

Day 2 (3h):

• Introduction to injuries of the periodontium

• Clinical examination, imaging, and documentation

• Utilizing the Dental Trauma Guidelines in the diagnosis

and management of injuries of the periodontium

• Management of the necrotic pulp in young patients –

apexification and revacularization

Day 3 (3h):

• Tooth Avulsion

• Tooth resorptions: types, diagnosis, and management

• Diagnosis and management of canal calcification

• Diagnosis and management of tooth discoloration of pulpal origin

Speaker Bio

Isabel Mello, DDS, MSc, PhD, FRCDC

Dr. Mello received her DDS from the Federal University of Alfenas, Brazil. She completed her residency and Master of Science in Endodontics at the University of São Paulo and later defended her PhD in Dental Sciences through a joint program between the University of São Paulo and the University of British Columbia.

She is the Division Head of Endodontics at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada, and has received several teaching awards throughout her academic career. Dr. Mello has lectured nationally and internationally, is an active researcher, and has published several papers in peer-reviewed journals. She is a board-certified Endodontist and a fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada. She is also a reviewer for the Journal of Endodontics and other journals. Dr. Mello serves as consulting staff in the Dentistry Department at the IWK Children’s Hospital in Nova Scotia and maintains a part-time practice in the region.
